In Part 1 of, The Word of His Power, we discovered that when God creates, or works, He speaks it into existence. He uses words to accomplish His will. In Part 2, we will examine how Jesus did things when He was in the flesh on this earth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the disciples were in the boat and a storm arose -Matt 8:26 And He saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
To the man who couldn’t walk sitting by the pool at Bethesda -
John 5:8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
To the man with the withered hand -Mark 3:5 And when He had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
To the daughter of the ruler of the synagogue -Mark 5:41 And He took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
In the gates of Nain to the dead, only son of the widow -Luke 7:14 And He came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And He said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.
To Lazarus who had been dead 4 days -John 11:43 And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
To the fig tree near Bethany -Mark 11:11-14 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when He had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, He went out unto Bethany with the twelve. (12) And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, He was hungry: (13) And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, He came, if haply He might find any thing thereon: and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. (14) And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.
In Matthew 17 when the man brought his son whom the disciples could not heal to Jesus, what did Jesus do to heal him?Matt 17:17-18 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. (18) And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
After Jesus had described to the disciples how he must suffer at the hands of the Pharisees and be killed, how did He deal with Peter's response?Matt 16:22-23 Then Peter took Him, and began to rebuke Him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. (23) But He turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
When Christ was being tempted by Satan, how did He combat it?
By quoting scripture!
Matt 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. (quoting Deut 8:3)
Matt 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (quoting Deut 6:16)
Matt 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (quoting Deut 6:13)
Jesus' words are spirit and life (John 6:63). Jesus spoke God's word continually. He was established in His Father's word. He overcame the world by the spoken word.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heb 1:1-3 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, (2) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the worlds; (3) Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He is upholding all things by the Word of His power. We know that His power resides in His Spirit (Zech 4:6) but how does He apply that power? If He had said "by the power of His Word", that would imply that His Word is just one avenue by which Christ exudes power; that would have meant that there is some power in God's word, but not all power. But by choosing this phraseology, it tells us that is how His power is applied, in the Word, in what he says.
Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
So, now we see that God accomplishes His will by speaking it (Part 1) and that Jesus accomplishes His will by speaking it (Part 2). In Part 3 of, The Word of His Power, we will see what we can find regarding how man is to operate on earth and what role the words he says play in his life.
